Happy New Year!
I hope you have all had a wonderful Christmas and that you are having a brilliant start to 2018.
With only a five week half term and week 1 nearly done we have so much fun to fit into Spring 1 in Maple Class.
This half term we will be focusing on stories with repetitive patterns. To help us do this we will be reading books related to farms - The Little Red Hen, Cock a Moo Moo and A Squash and a Squeeze. We will be going on two farm visits to put our reading into context - we are really excited about this! Our writing work will focus on developing our pencil control skills and letter formation. To do this we will be doing lots of fine motor and mark making activities with a range of sensory materials. Our reading work will focus on comprehension of the stories we have read, and we will be using Colourful Semantics to help us to form sentences about the stories.
Speaking and Listening work will focus on giving and following instructions. We will need to do really good listening to our teachers and to each other to do this. We will make these activities really practical with lots of motivating items to make our learning fun!

In Number we will be focusing on becoming more familiar with Numicon to develop our number skills. We will be able to use the Numicon shapes in lots of different ways to help us remember the numerical value associated with each shape, and we will use the shape formation to help us find out how many objects we have without having to count each object one by one. We will also be doing lots of counting songs and games to help us count to even bigger numbers!
Other mathematical topics this half term include weight, money and shape. There will be lots of opportunities for the children to apply their new learning in role play settings and during continuous provision activities to allow them to embed their new skills. We love doing lots of practical activities in maths!
Cross Curricular Studies
Our topic this half term is 'puppets'. We will be using our art and design skills to make our own puppets that we can use in our own puppet shows. We will have to think carefully about the materials and colours we use for our puppets and we will be able to apply our music skills to provide introduction music to the shows to grab the attention of our audience. Make sure you keep an eye on the blog as we will be able to use our computing skills to film the shows or take pictures of the action that we can share with you.
PE and PSHE
This half term our PSHE focus is "Healthy Exercise" so we will be encorporating lots of daily activity breaks to ensure that we are keeping our bodies healthy. We will be developing our throwing and catching skills in PE so that we can take part in lots of new activities during our activity breaks. We will be thinking about how our bodies feel after exercise and which activities we enjoy doing best!
In RE we are learning all about religious leaders. We will be thinking about what leaders do, play games that allow us to be leaders, and begin to understand that religious leaders help people and teach people about God.
We will continue to regularly update the blog so that you can see some of our wonderful work as well as sharing samples of work via Evidence for Learning.
