Here at Astley Park School we have developed our reading schemes to incorporate children of all abilities. For the majority of children we use the phonics scheme Sounds-Write however for some children this is not appropriate. For those children we now have Pre-Sounds-Write curriculum which focuses on the children's ability to sit and attend as well as developing their speaking, listening and attention skills. Here are some of the targets:

I can attend in a group with one other pupil for 1 minute

I can attend to a motivating activity with one other pupil for 2 minutes

I can wait my turn after one other pupil

I can listen for a word (eg. Go!) and respond appropriately (eg. Throw ball) on 1:1 basis

I can listen for a word (eg. Go!) and respond appropriately (eg. Throw ball) with one other pupil

I can match photographs of familiar everyday objects,  tasks and routines

I can explore an interactive book with an adult

I will show interest in familiar nursery rhymes/song with props on 1:1 basis

I can explore sensory materials with my hands

In the next academic year Miss Hothersall and Miss Curry will be hosting a guidance session for parents of those children for whom the scheme is suitable. This will give parents the opportunity to see how its taught within school and ways you can incorporate it into your home life. Watch out for letters in the children's bags come September.
