Welcome to Astley Park School's Cooking and Nutrition curriculum page.

Cooking and Nutrition is a valued subject and is taught throughout the whole school to ensure the children learn and understand essential life skills. The aims of the subject within each key stage are:

Key stage 1

  • To use the basic principles of a healthy and varied diet to prepare dishes and to understand where food comes from.

Key stage 2

  • To understand and apply the principles of a healthy and varied diet.

  • To prepare and cook a variety of predominantly savoury dishes using a range of cooking techniques.

  • To understand seasonality and know where and how a variety of ingredients are grown, reared, caught and processed.

Key stage 3

  • To understand and apply the principles of nutrition and health.

  • To cook a repertoire of predominantly savoury dishes so that they can feed themselves and others a healthy and varied diet.

  • To become competent in a range of cooking techniques and to understand the source, seasonality and characteristics of a broad range of ingredients.

We are very lucky to have a Food Technology room which we can access on a weekly basis. As part of their work with food, children are taught how to cook and apply the principles of nutrition and healthy eating. Learning how to cook is a crucial life skill that enables the children to feed themselves and others now and in later life.
