Welcome to our English curriculum page.

Being one of the core subjects, the overarching aim for English in the National Curriculum, is to promote high standards of language and literacy by equipping pupils with skills in spoken and written language, and to develop their love of literature through widespread reading for enjoyment. Basic skills in these areas are fundamental to all pupils, especially as they prepare for life after Astley Park School. We place the upmost importance in developing and extending these skills in appropriate, purposeful and functional ways. Our curriculum is underpinned by the ways in which each of our pupils learn and we recognise and celebrate every single step of progress; and what fantastic progress they make!!

We pride ourselves on the high calibre of teaching and learning of English that take place across the school and this is made exciting and motivating to the pupils by the fantastic resources and apps that we have available e.g Puppetpals, Chatterkids, Textingstory and Education City.  Importantly, English topics are age appropriate and encourage cross curricular creativity.

Phonics - Astley Park School has an instruction-led approach towards reading and spelling.  Most pupils follow a multi-sensory approach using the Soundswrite programme but for our early years pupils, a bespoke pre-phonic, sensory pathway has been developed that takes into account the specific needs of these learners. All pupils have access to phonically decodable books as well as whole language texts to ensure that they experience both the joy of reading and increase their reading confidence.

Please feel free to browse through our English page and enjoy some of the fantastic and creative work that is captured at Astley Park School each and every day.
