Welcome back to Astley Park everyone!! It was lovely to listen to the students talking about their Christmas presents and holidays.
We have another action packed term coming up and obviously the current buzz word is "residential. " Both staff and students are gearing up towards a fantastic week of fun activities this February. We are keen for all of our students to experience this fantastic opportunity as it not only gives them brilliant opportunities in team building and self confidence but also gives the staff the chance to see your amazing children achieve outside of the school environment. If you have not sent back your information pack, please could you return to school as soon as possible.
This term our topic is leisure and sports. We will be looking at using the gym and accessing local leisure facilities. We will be exploring the internet to discover what is available in our local area and what information we need to know when we are planning to use a leisure facilities e.g. the cinema. We will also use newspapers and magazines to find out about how advertising works. We will be using technology to access the community and learning how to be Super Digital Citizens.
In Science we are looking at Forces and will be using different experiments to discover the different types of forces at work in our everyday lives. Within maths, we continue general number and time through functional activities e.g. leisure centre timetabling etc.
Within SRE this term, we will be thinking about body awareness and how our bodies change as we grow up. We will begin a new ASDAN accreditation module of Personal Social Development - Parenting Awareness. This module centres around understanding what it is like to be a new parent and the demands that it brings. Hopefully we will have a new baby visiting the class so that the students have an opportunity to ask a new parent what it is really like.
In Duke of Edinburgh we will be looking at volunteering in school. Each student will have an opportunity to help in an aspect that supports the wider running of the school.
PE remains on a Thursday afternoon so students are encouraged to wear sports clothes and trainers. Please supply warm coats and other appropriate items of clothing for our walks through the community. This term we will be looking at gymnastics.
Tuesday afternoons also continues to be our community access and independent living sessions, where we will be out and about in the local area. Should you wish your child to have snack and contribute towards independent living /community access - this is £2 per week (£10 for the half term as one week we are at Calvert.)
