During our Wednesday life skills sessions we have been working towards living a better, healthier US! We alternate cooking healthy snacks and meals and a theory session. These sessions are to support our young people to become more independent around school and at home. The sessions also support with their communication and interaction with peers and staff throughout school, this in turn will support their communication at home and in other environments.
During the cooking sessions they have been able to make: vegetable soup, mince pies (our Christmas treat!), fruit skewers and healthy cheese & potato pie. Our first practical session was to see what our current knowledge is using various kitchen equipment to cut, slice, chop, grate and even using a tin opener. We have some spectacular sessions planned in the following weeks including healthy pizza (using wholemeal pitta and vegetables) and fruit smoothies to name a few.
Our theory sessions have been run the alternate Wednesday. We have been able to underpin our knowledge about the different food groups and the ‘eat well plate’ using different methods, including: an interactive board game, a turn taking board game, making our healthy lunch boxes and flash card games. The young people have learnt how important it is for our bodies to eat a healthy varied diet, to support a healthier US. These sessions will continue throughout the year and we will be looking at safety in the kitchen and at home, daily cleanliness routines and lifestyle choices.
