On Monday this week, 9P learnt about Martin Luther King Day! We read a PowerPoint about this inspirational man and then watched a video about him, before also watching a video about Rosa Parcs who also took a stand for Black Civil Rights in America. The children really enjoyed learning about MLK and asked a lot of very good questions about segregation and boycotts in particular. They then completed differentiated Colourful Semantics activities about Martin Luther King, linked to what they'd just learnt through the PowerPoint and video. They all did really well and remembered lots of important information about MLK. At the end of the lesson, we watched MLK's I have a dream speech. The children found it difficult to understand some of his wording, but Miss Buck explained his metaphors to them after the speech.

After the lesson, Ethan was really interested in finding out more about Martin Luther King. He asked if he could research MLK during his choose time with Miss Buck. Ethan and Miss Buck found out lots of fascinating further information! They found out that his I have a dream speech was difficult to hear because someone sabotaged the specialist sound system just before the speech. He also found out that the second half of MLK's speech was completely improvised, which includes the I have a dream part! Ethan reflected that this was such a powerful speech and shared with Miss Buck that it made the government make changes and take notice. We further learnt about his siblings and his parents, and how many of his family members also fought for Black Civil Rights, including after MLK's death in his memory.

Over lunchtime on Monday, we also watched a few more videos about Martin Luther King. One of these was a reading of a storybook about MLK and his childhood. It told of how MLK was friends with a child of an opposite race and was encouraged to stay apart from his friend once they became 6 years old. The children were very reflective and found out so much about this inspirational figure! Well done, 9P.
