This week KS4 started their work experience at Chorley Hospital. Year 11 and year 10 students headed off to the Life Centre where we met Karen, who would be showing us round and leading the sessions while we are there. We started off by going through what each week would look like before Karen split us into two groups and asked us to think of all the different jobs someone could do if they worked in the NHS. Karen told us there were over 300 jobs so we gave it our best and everyone had some brilliant answers!
After this, Karen showed us some of the different uniforms people can wear if the work in the hospital and the learners had a race to see who could pick the right uniform and get the staff dressed as fast as possible. We then got a map of the hospital and Karen gave us a list of places for a scavenger hunt; we found what floor and room each place was and then we left the Life Centre and used the signs to help us get around. We headed down to Linens first and met the staff who told us how the get deliveries of clean bedding and uniforms and how they have to distribute it all around the hospital. They told us they get a delivery of over 1000 bedsheets every two days!
Then, we went on a tour around the rest of the hospital and got to look at a few different departments, including pathology, the eye clinic and radiology. We saw lots of different people with lots of different jobs hard at work and it was really interesting to see parts of the hospital people don't normally see. After all getting our step count in for the day, we said goodbye to Karen and headed back to school. A big thank you to Karen and Chorley Hospital for this experience and we'll see you next week for catering!
