Another busy busy start to the week in 7A this week! The next celebration that we are focusing on is the Hindu festival of Diwali. To begin our learning about this we read the story of Rama and Sita during our My Communication lesson on Monday morning. Josh and Jake were already familiar with the story and helped Mrs Fisher to tell everyone the story. We then moved to our iPads to complete some work about the Rama and Sita story. Some of us were building sentences about the pictures from the story using Colourful Semantics on the Book Creator app (who doing what and who doing what where), whilst some of us were answering comprehension questions about the events from the story. It was really good to see everyone getting stuck into their work and producing excellent sentences using the Colourful Semantics structure. Several of the pupils agreed that using the colour and the symbols really helps them to structure their sentences correctly which is fantastic to hear!
Monday afternoon was Me and My Body time on the bikes on the track outside. We also played football together and went for a walk around the track to keep our bodies moving.
Tuesday morning was My Thinking and Problem Solving where we were learning more about measurement, specifically weight. We played a game on the board from Education City involving reading the scale and working out how much an object weighs in grams. We took it in turns to have a go and it was really nice to hear everyone encouraging each other and cheering each other on to get the answers correct. Ms Carter took small groups to continue with the weighing theme and made some coconut Diwali treats for snack time. Pupils took it in turns to weigh out the ingredients needed, following the recipe carefully then combined the ingredients together. It didn’t look exactly like the picture on the recipe shall we say (more like corned beef!) but when everyone got to sample it at snack time in the afternoon there were lots of thumbs up! We completed some Diwali themed activities too- colouring Rangoli patterns, making Rangoli patterns in the coloured rice tray and some Diwali themed cutting activities.
Over the past few weeks we have had the odd occasion in class were pupils in 7A are not always being honest about something that has happened so on Tuesday afternoon, Ms Carter led a session about the importance of being honest and telling the truth. The class listened to the story of the Boy Who Cried Wolf, then chatted about what the story meant. At the end of the session we played a game where pupils had to work out if the sentence on the board was the truth or a lie. Everyone appeared to understand the difference between the truth and a lie and we have all agreed we will try our best to tell the truth going forward.
Finally on Wednesday morning we revisited the story of Rama and Sita in My Communication. This time Mrs Fisher only put the pictures from the story on the board and the class worked together to remember the story and retell it in their own words. It was fantastic to see so many pupils recall the story in such detail! For our work, we continued to build sentences using Colourful Semantics on the iPads and it was brilliant to see so many pupils being able to work more independently using this method.
Please take a look at our other blog to see how we remembered Remembrance Day in 7A this year.
