Happy weekend, it is forecast to be a scorcher, so we hope you all get to enjoy the sunshine together! It has been a jam-packed week in 10G this week, we have packed so much in! We have had quite a few pupils who have been unwell and have had to stay at home while they recover so we hope everyone is feeling much better and we hope to see everyone back together again on Monday.
Our Healthy Living theme continues and will do so after the half term break as well. There is definitely a divide in class where the smart watches are concerned: some people’s competitive streaks have kicked in and they are determined to meet their daily target of 7000 steps or even more, whereas some people have lost their motivation and need A LOT of encouragement to get to anywhere near their daily target. We have increased our daily run to 3 laps of the track, and we are learning about pacing ourselves so that we can run for longer, rather than sprinting and ending up very tired and out of breath. Big shout out to Eshan this week for pushing himself to move more every day. He is very proud of his very own smartwatch that he has bought for himself. We have spoken about the importance of keeping ourselves clean, especially whilst we are doing more physical activity and while the weather is heating up. We are asking everyone to have a shower or a bath every single day, as well as remember to wear deodorant every day too. After half term we will be continuing our healthy habits of moving more and keeping clean then starting to look at the food choices that we make.
On Monday morning, Group 1 went shopping into Chorley Town Centre with Miss Greenwood, Miss Smith and Mr Greenwood. They were practicing keeping safe when walking near the roads and crossing the roads as well as purchasing our juice for the week. Back in school, Mrs Cobham accompanied a small group of pupils as they went into 10R to complete some Entry Level Maths work. In class, Mrs Fisher and Miss Loan were working with a small group who were learning more about keeping safe in the community. We talked about different scenarios that we might find ourselves in and discussed what we would do next and how we could keep ourselves safe.
In the afternoon, we took part in our next Parenting Awareness session. We talked about the stresses and strains that a baby might bring to our lives if we were responsible for them and how it isn’t easy to bring up a baby. We got the babies out and practiced caring for them, feeding them, bathing them and dressing them. Lots of us needed reminders to hold the babies properly rather than by their legs and how we can’t throw babies around the classroom or leave them lying on a table while we decide to do another activity. We are all very excited for our special visitors next Monday afternoon! Mrs Cobham led a Good to Be Me session and everyone said how much they have missed the sessions due to the bank holidays that we’ve had recently.
On Tuesday morning, we were very lucky to have a visit from a Buddhist Monk. We went into the hall and listened to him speak about his beliefs and how he became a monk. Then he showed us how to meditate. We were all surprised at how calm all the pupils who were taking part were and think that we should adopt some of these techniques into our classroom! Mrs Fisher, Miss Loan and Mr Greenwood took Group 2 out into Chorley for Community Access. In our keeping safe session on Monday Tyler had asked what he should do if he found himself lost in Chorley and there were no shops open. Mr Greenwood took us into Chorley Police Station and showed everyone the front desk. The lady on the desk told us that if the door was open, anyone could come to the desk to ask for help if they needed it.
Tuesday afternoon was cooking and after all those pizzas we made last week for Sharing our Learning, we decided to move on to making something new: toasties. We kept it simple for our first attempt and stuck to good old cheese for the filling. We are all getting much better at following simple written or visual instructions to complete cooking activities with Miss Greenwood, Miss Smith and Mr Greenwood. We will add the photos from our cooking to this blog on Monday when we are back in class as the photos are on the class iPad! In class, Mrs Fisher, Mrs Cobham and Miss Loan were working on some personal hygiene activities with everyone. Some of us were following a schedule to wash our hands properly; remembering to rub the soap in before we rinse and making sure we dry our hands when we have finished. The rest of us were thinking about our personal hygiene routine at home and it opened up discussions about how much we do for ourselves and how much our parents or carers do for us. We talked about how important it is to take some responsibility for our own personal hygiene as we are getting older.
Wednesdays are always crazy days with swimming in the morning and then PE in the afternoon. Mrs Fisher set up 10G Bootcamp with the equipment on the field and we even got the big speaker out to blast some tunes while we were taking part. I hope you can see from the photographs just how hard everyone (staff included) worked. We finished the lesson with a relay race on the track and it was brilliant to see everyone following our school value of teamwork by cheering each other on and celebrating no matter who won.
On Thursday morning, Miss Anderton was in 10G teaching Science and the class were learning more about animals and the habitats that they live in and why. In the afternoon as the weather was so good, the class walked up to Devonshire Rec Park for lots of fun together. Everyone had so much fun that there have been a lot of requests for another park visit so we have decided, weather permitting, to go and visit the park on our last day next Thursday in the afternoon, after our treat dinner from Critchley’s Farm Shop.
We finally made it to Friday and it was our last visit to Cardinal Newman for this school year for some of our learners. We are hoping to arrange some more sessions for learners for September, we will let you know more information once these have been sorted. As Group 3 missed their Community Access session this week, we joined forced with Mrs Powell and some learners from 10R and walked to Asda in Chorley. We ate our morning snack in the café, then browsed the shop to choose our Friday treat to share with everyone. Once everyone had returned from college, we all went outside in the afternoon for Golden Time. We borrowed the big speaker and microphones again and ended up having a karaoke party on the field. Even Mrs James and Mrs Cheetham joined in with us!
Unfortunately, our Star of the Week this week was absent from school on Friday so she missed assembly where her name was announced but we still need to say a huge well done to Lily! Lily has smashed her steps this week, using any spare time that she has had to march around the classroom or outside. In bootcamp on Wednesday, Lily showed her determination and tried her hardest on every station of our circuit. We had so many comments from other staff members about how amazing Lily was at using the battle ropes and how impressed they were with her strength. Well done Lily!
Enjoy your weekend and we will see everyone on Monday morning!
