Wow it has been another scorcher of a week in school this week! Because of this, we have taken the pressure off with our daily step target and have accepted however many steps everyone has done by the end of the day. We have talked lots about the importance of resting when the weather is so hot, as well as making sure we are drinking plenty of fluids. It has also given us a good opportunity to talk more about sun safety and applying sun cream at regular intervals throughout the school day. Thank you to those who have sent in sun cream for their child to use. We have definitely spent a lot of time in the shade under the trees on the field.

On Monday it was Miss Greenwood’s birthday and we all surprised her by singing Happy Birthday very loudly as she came into school. In the morning Group 1 went into town to find a watering can to help us to water the seeds that we planted last week with Miss Anderton. They are living in the polytunnel on the field at the moment and we are trying very hard to keep them watered in this very hot weather.

In the afternoon we took the opportunity to spend some time in the shade outside and sat together for some circle time. We worked on our conversation skills, asking questions and taking turns to answer, as well as listening to the things that our friends say to us. Everyone got the chance to think of one question that they would like to ask everyone in class, then we took it in turns to answer the questions. We had a wide range of questions from “What’s your favourite biscuit?” to “If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?” It is clear to see how far some of our learners in 10G have come this year in terms of their focus and attention and social skills. We are so proud of everyone and the progress they have made.

On Tuesday Miss Marshall joined our class. Miss Marshall is studying Mental-Health nursing at Edge Hill University and will be carrying out her placement with us in 10G for the next 4 weeks. We are all looking forward to getting to know her.

As it has been Rainbow Week this week, we have had lots of conversations about different types of families and people and what some of the acronyms in the LGBTQ+ community mean. Tyler and Miss Greenwood thought of a question to ask: If you decided you were Trans and changed genders, what would your name be? They asked everyone in 10G for their answers and then walked around school asking lots of pupils and staff. They got a wide range of answers and we were all very interested to hear what they had found out.

On Tuesday afternoon, it was our cooking session. Mrs Fisher and Miss Greenwood were up in the food tech room leading a session on making fruit skewers, whilst Mrs Cobham, Miss Loan and Miss Marshall were completing some rainbow themed artwork with the pupils. Some pupils from Rowan class came to join in with our cooking session too with Miss McPartlin.

On Wednesday we were very lucky to be able to go swimming at Hindley swimming pool again! 10G have already swam for 3 half terms this year, but Mr Murphy had a spare slot and asked us if we would like to use it. Paula the swimming teacher was very pleased to see us! We were working on stamina and swimming lengths of the pool, then at the end of the session we all came to the shallow end to sing some songs and play some games.

In the afternoon we all sat together to learn more about Pride and why it is celebrated. We learnt that in some countries even today, being gay is illegal and if you are found to be gay then you can be sentenced to death. Many of the pupils spoke about how unfair that is and said how you should be able to love whoever you want to love.

We ended the afternoon with a video call to Miss Smith at home so that we could sing Happy Birthday to Miss Greenwood, Miss Smith and Miss Loan who all have birthdays this week. We loved sharing the giant chocolate cake with all our friends in school.

Thursday was a very arty day. Miss Anderton started off making Father’s Day cards in the morning with everyone, then in the afternoon we decorated our flag ready for the Rainbow Parade on Friday.

Finally, Friday was Rainbow Day and it was such a fun-packed day! We started off with PE in the morning where Mrs Linde and Miss Wells came to watch the fantastic job we did in Bootcamp. It was definitely a hot one, so we made sure we had plenty of drink breaks. In the afternoon it was time for our water fight against 9A. We had lots of fun soaking each other in the sun and we have all agreed to have a re-match during Golden Time next Friday. Next it was time for the Rainbow Parade around the track with all the school. Everyone’s flags were flying, and it was so nice to see all the colours of everyone’s clothes as we all walked around. We finished the afternoon with some delicious doughnuts that Miss Smith kindly brought in to celebrate her birthday.

It is Sports Week next week and we will be doing sporting activities every day. Everyone can wear sports clothes all week.

Have a good weekend and we will see some of you at the Summer Fair tomorrow!
