Today we have celebrated Diwali in 9P.

Diwali is also known as the Festival of Lights. In the very old Indian language, Sanskrit, Diwali (or Deepavali) means 'row of lamps'. People light lamps at Diwali to show that light is more powerful than darkness, and good is more powerful than evil. Diwali also celebrates new beginnings.

Mrs Hough explained that she had had a very busy weekend to prepare as Sunday 12th is when Diwali was.

It started on Friday where the house has to be cleaned from top to bottom.

On Saturday the house was decorated and food prepared ready for Sunday.

On Sunday it was Diwali, Mrs Hough visited family to give out presents, the house was  very bright with candles lit and then in the evening everyone got together to eat and celebrate.

It was a great day as Mrs Hough bought some items in to show us. We looked at Diya candles, Diwali cards and a traditional sari which was very very long and heavy. Mrs Hough made us some food that she has at her Diwali celebrations at home. We all tried chicken biryani, potato curry, samosas, naan bread, onion bhajis and poppadoms with mint yogurt.

We finished off with traditional Indian sweets. Most of us had very clean plates.

We would like to say a massive thankyou to Mrs Hough for making it all for us and we are really glad she is in our class!!!
