World Religion Week in 8A
This week at Astley Park School, it’s been “World Religion Week”.
8A looked at Buddhism religion.
The learners watched a PowerPoint about what Buddhist beliefs are.
8A listened to a story about how Siddhartha Gautama became a Buddha and what he taught others.
They found out that Siddhartha was born into a royal family and lived within the palace walls. He didn’t ever encounter suffering of life such as old age, illness and death. He decided when he was an adult it was time for him to go outside the palace walls. This is when he witnessed an old man, a sick man and even a corpse of a dead man. This taught him that even if you are wealthy, sickness, age and death comes to everyone. Siddhartha meets a holy man, dressed in rags and only owned a bowl. Despite this, he was calm and contented. After this he wanted to know if there was more to life and left his riches behind. He then started meditating and thought about the past, future and the four sightings he had seen. He became to teach people what he had realised and people started to call him “Buddha”.
The class all talked about what they could remember from the story, what we could learn from Buddha and ways we can improve in our lives.
We then did some colouring and we made a lotus flower out of card.
