This Tuesday Astley Park School looked at “World Hunger Day”.

Some learners in school brought in non perishable food items to donate. Thank you. These items will be donated to the locate food bank that families use when they are in difficult times.

8A was asked to write down on a white board their favourite food.

On their white boards there was lots of chicken, pizzas, fish, kebabs, steak, ice cream and an apple.

The classes discussed that schools provide a hot meal daily and in some families, that would be the only meal that person would eat.

8A was then asked what they could do to help people that are hungry.

8A came up with some fantastic ideas which included making them food, sharing their food, not wasting food and to donate spare food.

Miss Robertson then ask us to think of ideas on how we could reduce food waste.

Again, fantastic ideas from 8A including eating the food they were given to them, putting any left over food in the fridge or freezer and eat it on another day and to make smaller portions.

We then watched a you tube clip of children who aren’t as lucky as us and who go hungry every day .The word malnutrition was used a lot in this clip. The class discussed that this meant that they don’t get enough healthy food or even no food at all.

Mid week 8A celebrated World William Syndrome month. 8A looked at a PowerPoint about what William Syndrome is, looked at how people may look or behaviour if they have William Syndrome. The PowerPoint explained that William syndrome is a developmental disorder that affect parts of the body and affects learning.

The class then watched a YouTube video of a girl who has William Syndrome. She explained what it was like to live with William Syndrome.

8A looked at how they can help people who have William Syndrome. What great responses we had from all. The learners said, give simple instructions, to say the child’s names before talking to them, make sure they understand what you have asked them to do and give the children extra support with making friends, maintaining and deepening friendships.

As we have a learner in class with William Syndrome the class asked him a few questions on what it’s like having William syndrome with his consent.

Wow, what lovely questions they asked like:

How did u know you had William Syndrome.

How does it make you feel.

Have you ever what to get rid of it.

What things upset you.

How can I help.

How do u find school.

Best thing about William syndrome.

Finally the class completed a worksheet about things that made them special.

To celebrate William Syndrome month, Ethan brought in a lovely little gift for each learner in class. The learners were so thankful for this lovely gifts and left school with a huge smile on their faces.

We ended the week with a special treat which was McDonald’s. The pupils thoroughly enjoyed this and were incredibly happy about this treat! A huge thank you to Mrs Monk for this treat, it was very much appreciated by all.

Happy holidays from 8A team
