This week Willow class looked at gender stereotypes and thought about what ideas we already had about gender, maybe without realising.  We tied this into looking at how this affects the jobs and hobbies we think people can have due to their gender.

We explored which stereotypes we were affected by and which we believed during sorting activities and interests based on if they were only for boys, only for girls or for everyone. A few of us disagreed with different points but we were all respectful of each others ideas and this created some fantastic discussions! In the end we were all in agreement- we can all do anything we set our minds to!

We also had a tricky quiz where we needed to guess the gender of people with hidden faces. They were all in uniform so we were able to see what people thought were “boys jobs” or “girls jobs”. We then explored these by looking at some examples of both genders in the uniform and thinking which of the jobs we would like to try.

Later on we looked at hobbies and whether girls and boys can like the same things. We all completed a tick sheet to identify hobbies and interests we enjoyed. Miss Riley then asked willow class one by one to ask “does anyone else like ____” with a selected interest. We looked at all our friends with their hands up and saw boys and girls like lots of the same things and can be really good at different hobbies! We then all took turns to ask if anyone liked something that we did then spent some time engaging in this shared activity with a friend.

Willow class know that we can be anything we want to be if we put our minds to it!
