What is Buddhism?

Buddhism started in India over 2,500 years ago. Buddhists follow the  teachings of a man called Siddhatta Gautama. He became known as the Buddhism, which means 'enlightened '.

 

Where do they practice their religion?

Wherever they happen to be - Buddhism is a way of life. They have temples all over the far East - including Japan, Korea, India, Nepal, Thailand and Taiwan - they can also practice in their own home. 

Buddhism is a welcoming religion practice that allows for a great diversity of thought and belief among its followers. 

 

What is the name of their Holy book?

The Tripitaka is the name of the Holy book of Buddhism. 

Which means ' three baskets'. This is because the original writings were made on palm trees and stored in baskets. 

 

What values does the religion hold?

Beliefs and values of Buddhism are that Buddhists believe that everyone has the potential to become enlightened and that, by practising their religion,  they will develop wisdom and happiness. 

 

Do they have any special days or festival?

There are many special or Holy days held throughout the year by the Buddhist Community. Many of these days celebrate the birthdays of Bodhisattvas in the Mahayana tradition or other significant dates in the Buddhist calendar.
