Willow class have really enjoyed getting moving this week and have really showed off their sports abilities !

To start sports week on Monday we joined Mrs McDonnell on teams for a sports week warm up routine! We talked about sports week and how it is Astley Park’s version of the olympics. Miss Riley told us all about the history of the Olympics that started in Ancient Greece and some of the unusual sports it included like chariot racing. We looked at how the olympics has changed over time and how women are now involved and the addition of the Paralympics. Then we looked at our activities for the week and decided as a class on some extra activities we would like to squeeze in.

After lunch  we all took part in the egg and spoon race , all the children were amazing and crossed the finish line with the eggs still on the spoons .  Afterwards, we took the chance to do some cheer practice, taught by our very own Olivia! Olivia showed the class a routine to copy step by step and was a wonderful teacher.

On Tuesday it was a very busy day , the children took part in a football challenge and  rugby challenge. The children played beat the goalie against Miss Riley and Mrs Lane and then practices dribbling the ball to score and running to kick the ball. For our rugby challenge we learnt to use the underarm throw to our side when holding the ball and passed between friends. Then we practiced kicking the ball to score a try!

After this, Olivia taught us another routine- a dance routine this time! The children loved this and then all took turns to teach a dance for class to copy! Everyone was rolling on the floor laughing at some of the funny routines we created.

On Wednesday we explored orienteering using an aerial map of school to find stamps around the school grounds.  We all worked really well in teams and supported each other. Well done Willow you all did fab !

On Thursday we all took part in a rainbow run/ walk. All of the children pushed themselves and even won against the teachers !  In the morning we had a football match. Willow are very competitive and played with amazing team work , showing super sportsmanship at the end - congratulating each other and saying well done to their peers for a good game .

On Friday we had a go at the basketball challenge in the morning. We practised our bouncing in one spot, moving with the ball , and taking the all important shoot at the hoop !
We are very proud of you all this week for working hard on your sports challenges and for your amazing approach to tackling tricky sports you haven’t tried before . Well done .
