In October Willow Class learnt about why we have black history month, celebrating the achievements of black men and women. We have had lots of good conversation about wrong it would be to be be treated differently for how you look or where you come from with learners relating this to our own class promise- “be kind”. We have looked at some famous black figures in history like Rosa Parks and Nelson Mandela, some influential black artists like Bob Marley, Aretha Franklin and Ella Fitzgerald. We also looked at some black celebrities we look up to from things we enjoy like footballer Marcus Rashford, singers like Beyoncé and LeighAnne pinnock from Little mix and black youtubers like Tiana.
We looked at different ways people might celebrate black history month and liked the sound of parties so Miss Riley taught us all about Notting Hill Carnival in London. We made our own carnival masks then enjoyed listening to and dancing to some traditional carnival music to experience what it would be like.
Great work Willow class!
