11R have had a very busy start to their last term at Astley Park!

Last week we carried on with our ASDAN unit on Environmental Awareness, where we have been looking after the beds at the front of school and collecting the recycling from the other classes and throwing in our large bins ready for the bin men. We also had Rob from the Conflux Theatre in to run a workshop all about recycling; we talked about different things in our local areas that cause pollution and how we can help combat that. We did some roleplay about remembering to throw our rubbish away in the right places and make sure we recycle what can be recycled.

On Wednesday, we looked at Eid and at who celebrates it and why the celebrate it. We talked about how it's a celebration that comes at the end of Ramadan because people have been fasting and following lots of different rules. Some of 11R also started our work experience at the Life Centre at Chorley Hospital, where we were joined by a few learners from 10A and Mr Murphy. On Friday we had our first swimming lesson of the summer term and everyone did really well and had remembered what they learnt from the last time we went swimming.

This week on Monday we welcomed Miss Anderton as our teacher for Mondays and Tuesdays until the end of the year. We started off with maths in the morning where we were starting our work on fractions and then we continued with our gardening project in the afternoon, pulling up all the weeds that had made a reappearance in the past week. We also had a visit from our class governor Mr Maher who came to help us pull up some weeds. Tuesday morning had us looking at Passover and learning about why Jewish people celebrate it - we looked at the story of Moses and how people remember that through to modern day with things like prayers and the seder plate. In the afternoon we had our food tech lesson where we practised using sharp knives safely as well as cooking on the hob to make fajitas.

On Wednesday, we did a practice English writing paper in the morning as our assessment is only a few weeks away and we want to get in lots of practice before then. That afternoon it was Environmental Awareness again, this time looking at things in the environment that directly affect us like litter, dog fouling, vandalism etc... Thursday morning meant half of us were back at Chorley Hospital for work experience, this time visiting the catering department and seeing just how much work goes into providing food for so many people. We got to see the walk-in fridges and freezers as well as the kitchen and where all the food is prepped. The learners who remained at school did a science lesson and looked at the layers of the ocean and how things are different in each layer.

At Chorley in Bloom on Thursday afternoon we had Adrienne from Chorley Hedgehog Rescue come to tell us all about hedgehogs! She told us how to keep an eye out for hedgehogs in our gardens and how to make our gardens a safe space for hedgehogs. We also learnt about the dangers hedgehogs face and we can help reduce those dangers by being more conscious when we're out and about. On Friday we went swimming again and everyone did a brilliant job in the pool before coming back to school, ready for golden time and our celebration assembly. This week our Star of the Week is Jenny for asking some brilliant questions at Chorley in Bloom, you did a great job and we're all so proud.

We hope everyone has a fab weekend and we'll see you on Monday!

Mrs Powell, Mrs Woods, Miss Carter and Miss Anderton.
