We used our 1:1 iPads and the Padlet app to answer some questions about stereotypes. The first thing we did was send Mrs Clarke a picture of a girls toy and then a boys toy.
We looked at some different jobs including, nurse, beautician, electrician, footballer and we wrote on our iPads who we thought would do these jobs. Everyone thought a nurse and a beautician was a job that women do. Footballers and electricians were men’s jobs. When asked Thomas said that he could train to be nurse if he wanted to.
We looked at a young person called Frankie and the things they did - can we tell whether Frankie is a boy or a girl, we couldn’t from the descriptions because as a class we all liked some of the things Frankie liked.
Next we looked at a young person called Jamie who loves sports and is a wheelchair user - Cordell said that there are lots of wheelchair sports that you can join in like football, rugby and basketball so you shouldn’t presume that a wheelchair user can’t do the same things as an able bodied person.
We talked about stay at home parents, Mrs Cobham said that when she was a little girl her mum stayed at home and looked after her and her sisters and her dad went to work. We decided that a mum or a dad can be a stay at home parent and that’s ok.
We looked at some different jobs and had to say whether they were male or female jobs and decided that anyone can do any job they would like.
At the end we looked at the pictures we sent at the beginning and said if we thought they were for girls or boys or both could play with them.
We did a final search for toys that anyone could play with.
It’s okay to be me and it’s okay for me to like the things I like.
