In Willow class we enjoyed our DT topic making musical instruments last term. Miss Riley and the teachers were so impressed and could tell the children were ready for an enterprise project this term to put their planning and design skills to the test!

Our first enterprise project is looking at using resources readily available to us from the environment. Miss Riley’s neighbour has cut down a Bay Leaf tree and given the branches to Willow class. Willow class were very excited when Miss Riley explained we are going to have a project to sell them to raise money for our class Christmas party.

This week was all about preparation. We had a look at what bay leaves feel like and smell like before Miss Riley told us that people use them to help gala our food when cooking. Miss Riley explained that people might like to buy them from us if we advertise them well, charge a good price and put them in nice packaging.

This week the children in the product quality control group started by stripping the leaves from the branches and  then sorting the leaves to decide which were fit for sale.

The children in the research group were finding and recording how much other shops were charging for Bay leaves and what quantity they were selling them for. The boys in this group made some great comments on how the price being a bargain or not depends on how many grams of the ingredient each shop was selling.

The children in the design group were looking at different packaging to decide how we could package our bay leaves for sale. They were discussing how they could add words, patterns and pictures to the packaging to attract a customers attention and make it look like a nice gift people might buy to give to others.

What a great start to the project Willow class, we had lots of great discussions and lots of teamwork!
