Today the 'R' classes in KS4 took part in their My Choices Day. This is a collapsed curriculum day where option subjects are chosen by the pupils and they study their choices based on the theme. This term it is Remembrance Day and the option choices were: History, Geography, Art, Modern Foreign Languages, Performing Art and Design Technology.
Mrs Powell ran an MFL lesson in the morning based on our french allies. We looked at what the trenches would have been like and the food that the soldiers in the trenches had eaten. We learnt some french words for soldier, trench and the french words for some of the foods that they tried. We even made some Aztan Biscuits which the soldier's families would have sent to them while they were on the front line. Finally we made our own version of French bread and tried some french foods such as la fromage, le jambon, le croissant et la confiture. We also had the favourite - pain au chocolat!
During the morning, Mrs Tolan ran a session on art and design, we all watched a power point all about wars and the importance of the poppy symbol- and how it became synonymous with Remembrance Day! We looked at different vocabulary ie- Armistice Day and Cenotaph. We then used our creative skills to design and create a memorial cross each!
In the afternoon Mrs Powell ran the performing art lesson where students listened to The Last Post and then learnt a dramatic performance of 'Going over the top' which was further performed to the haunting bugle tune. Finally, we created some art using water colour and silhouette to show how desolate and cold the trenches were. Students described how they think it would have felt to be in the trenches after looking at a3d model on an interactive site.
Mrs Tolan ran a Humanities session- we started by discussing allies-which was a new word to most of us- We tested out knowledge on different flags- before locating the corresponding country on a globe! We all found it very interesting- and by working together we demonstrated how allies work together!
We looked at different uniforms, deciding which one we would prefer to wear and ended the session by designing our own uniforms.
