This half term, Mrs Crouch will be teaching The World About Me in Sycamore Class on Thursday mornings. As part of the class theme, All Around The World, we will be learning all about festivals. Today we learnt about how to keep safe on Bonfire Night.
One group worked with Mr Flavell in the kitchen. They made edible sparklers using breadsticks, chocolate and sprinkles. The children have began to learn about how to use the microwave safely, learning that the microwave makes food hot and how to safely take food out of the microwave. They melted the chocolate and followed visual instructions to make their sparklers. Whilst waiting for the sparklers to set, the group talked about how to keep safe on bonfire night. Scarlett told everybody they need to keep back from the fire. We also talked about how to hold sparklers safely, wearing gloves and holding sparklers near the bottom. We showed Mr Flavell how we would do this on our edible sparkler.
Another group worked with Mrs Crouch in the forest. Mrs Crouch led an outdoor attention autism session. We used poppers and a party cannon to symbolise fireworks and a spinning light to symbolise a Catherine wheel. Mrs Crouch then made a pretend bonfire out of tissue paper and lights. Mrs Crouch stood back from the bonfire. She showed us how to be safe with a real sparkler, sticking the sparkler into a carrot, putting on gloves and holding the carrot. An adult had to light the sparkler to keep safe and when the sparkler had gone out, she put it in a bucket of sand and gave it an adult to put away. We then took turns to add to our firework painting, splatting the paint, before returning to class to make our own firework painting.
Everybody had lots of fun today. We hope you all have a safe bonfire night on Saturday.
Next week, we will be learning all about Remembrance Day.
