Astley Park School had a fantastic time on Wednesday 8th March as we celebrated the Hindu festival of Colour known as Holi. Holi is a Hindu festival that celebrates Spring, Love and new life. Holi is a colour festival, with dancing, singing and throwing powder paint and coloured water. It marks the arrival of Spring and the end of Winter, however due to the typical British weather we celebrated this glorious festival with added snow!
Throughout the week classes at Astley Park explored the festival of Holi through a variety of mediums including colourful play dough gym, interactive and immersive exploration of colour in the sensory room, reading the story of Holika and Prahlad to learn the importance of why Hindus light a bonfire before Holi festival. We particularly enjoyed viewing videos of children celebrating the Holi festival and having fun throwing paint at each other. Classes have explored Holi through sensory stories and Attention Autism sessions and creative tasks including decorating their classrooms with colour and paper chains. Sycamore class enjoyed looking at photos of Rian’s family celebrating Holi. They made some colourful pictures to wish everyone a Happy Holi and enjoyed colour fun in the sensory room before taking part in the brilliant Holi festival celebrations outside.
During the afternoon all children and staff were invited to join in the celebrations of Holi festival as we listened and danced to music and launched coloured powder paints to create a huge cloud of colour following a countdown. Afterwards we made our way around the track where members of staff threw coloured paints as we passed. It was a truly amazing whole school event and the smiles and laughter from the children will be treasured. This was the perfect end to our learning about Holi.
